Chris Spurgeon, MT-BC

Pronouns: he/him

Chris Spurgeon has been playing piano and guitar since he was a child. He pursued music as a hobby during his time at Virginia Commonwealth University (BA, History) and George Mason University (Masters, Special Education). He then spent six years as a teacher of students with Autism and Specific Learning Disabilities. His most fulfilling moments in the classroom were those when he was able to promote learning while also inspiring joy and healing through the power of music. In 2022, he completed his music therapy internship at Healing Sounds and graduated from Shenandoah University with a degree in Music Therapy. Chris is excited to be back at Healing Sounds as a board certified music therapist!

Chris currently only works on Saturdays, and is open to working with all ages and abilities.

What is your role at Healing Sounds?

During the week I am a 4th Grade Exceptional Education Teacher with Richmond Public Schools and I see individual Music Therapy clients on Saturdays at Healing Sounds

What are 3 words that describe you?

fun, relaxed, compassionate

Who are some of your favorite music artists?

The Beatles, Neil Diamond, Steely Dan

What is something you like to do outside of work?

I love to read -- especially about history

What do you love most about working at Healing Sounds?

I love having the opportunity to meet and collaborate with so many truly interesting and talented clients.

What should potential clients know about working with you?

I really enjoy collaboration and improvisation. I've been playing piano and guitar since I was a teenager and the thing I've worked hardest on is learning to respond to people in the moment through music -- whether I'm jamming with some friends or working with a client. I like to let sessions unfold like a duet.
